Expand

Spend the morning cross-country skiing along the Athabasca River, making fresh tracks in the snow as you glide yourself across the frozen river bank. Don’t forget to stop and take in the epic mountain views that surround you. As there’s no designated trail to follow here, be cautious along the river and pay careful attention to the thickness of the ice.

1118 metres

Gear/Equipment Recommended:

Cross-country skis, poles, boots and bindings.

Hike Old Fort Point

Old Fort Point isn't an extreme hike, but it's got a big payoff: unbelievable mountain and townsite views.

Duration:

1-2 hours

Cost:

Free
Expand

Since you’re already in the area, why not summit Old Fort Point to get a bird’s eye view of the town of Jasper and the surrounding mountain ranges? There are two options for reaching the top. You can either take Trail 1 from the parking lot that takes the long way around (roughly 4 kilometres) coming up to the summit from behind, or take the stairs from the parking lot to hike up the front side for a steeper, but much faster climb.

Keep in mind that in the winter, snowshoes may be required for the longer loop, and the front side climb may not be an option due to it being too icy. Also – be sure to keep your eye out for the big horn sheep that frequent the area!

Elevation:

1170 metres

Gear/Equipment Recommended:

Appropriate footwear, water, and a camera.

Day 2

Ski-Touring

Hidden Cove really is hidden! You'll need a fatbike, skis or snowshoes to get here.

Duration:

4-5 Hours

Cost:

Free - $$

Located 4 kilometres down Maligne Lake, Hidden Cove can be reached by fat bike, snowshoes and skis. Mike and his family set out for a day of ski-touring adventure, suitable for all levels, on this 8 kilometre round trip. Note that safe ice travel is between mid January and early April.

Elevation:

2703.2 metres

Backcountry skis or snowboard, poles, climbing skins, boots, goggles, avalanche probe and transceiver, snow thermometer, snow shovel, ski repair kit

Pizza Dinner

One word: cheese. Need we say more?

Hit up this small town pizza joint for some classic two-hander pizza. This is Mike’s go-to spot to take his family for a bite to eat. Crawl into a window-seat booth and enjoy some time to relax. There’s nothing wrong with sticking to the basics here, such as Mike’s favourite, pepperoni.
